Weekly Wrap-up #10

Do you wish you could understand music genres? Are you interested in archaeology? Do you have a book (or other project) you wish you could finish? The links below will help you in these quests, and more!

Genres

Have you ever wondered what music genres are? What are the differences between them? What is the overlap? There is an amazing website called Every Noise that’s attempting to figure out exactly that. We especially like the page: Genres in their own words which lists the most common words in song titles sorted by genre.

Archaeological Finds

Stonehenge, Newgrange, and the Colosseum are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to strange, inexplicable, and ancient structures. This article lists ten archaeological finds you may have never heard about, and it’s far from an exhaustive list!

Science Fiction on Stage

Maybe you don’t think about theatre much, and if you do you probably think theatres are only doing old classics like “You Can’t Take it With You” or “Midsummer Night’s Dream,” overdone musicals such as “Hairspray” and “Rent,” or the ever-present “Steel Magnolias” and other plays no one understands. If so, you might be wrong. There are new stageplays being written every day for a fresh, modern audience and for their subject they might be turning more and more to scifi–as several reviews on IO9 seem to indicate. “Salvage” is a post-apocolyptic drama, and “DEINDE” is about enhanced intelligence and the definition of humanity itself. Both are presented by Flux Theatre, and are well-worth reading about for an idea of how to think outside the box–even in one of the oldest art forms in the world.

Why and How To Finish Your Book

I stumbled across the second of these posts by accident, and found a delightful breakdown of some of the most difficult problems writer’s face–reaching the finish line. In “Finish Your Damn Book,” author Catherine Ryan Howard gives a personal story about her struggle with this problem and ends with a challenge. In “How to Finish Your Damn Book” she breaks it down even more, addressing a lot of issues most people skirt around, such as whether or not you really want to finish the book, or you secretly want to abandon it on the stairs of a near-by church or charitable organization.
